Leaf-cutting ants use a trail system to transport leaf fragments to their nests. This foraging trail system can be considered as their extended phenotype, and thus is under natural selection to reduce their costs and increase their benefits. In this project, we study how diverse characteristics of trail design (widths, bifurcation angles, etc.) are subjected to the ecological trade-off of maximize the foraging rate without increase traffic conflicts. Additionally, we study how ant behavior can also help to reduce traffic jams.
